Message from the Chair

Emily D. Anderson, Division 10 Chair

2 x 4 x 10 has hit the web!

It is my pleasure to announce that Division 10 has converted 2x4x10 into a blog after 13 wonderful years as a newsletter providing Division 10 members and the ABA Forum on Construction Law at large with the latest and greatest on legal issues involving transportation, energy and environmental projects, legislation and notable cases!

We’ve taken our long-standing publication to the web for a few reasons. First and foremost, we feel like taking the publication online increases our ability to expand our reach to more construction professionals. When 2x4x10 started in 2010, sending newsletters was a more prevalent practice and it simply was not as easy to publish online as it is today.

Second, 2x4x10 has faced a major transition as our talented Asha Echeverria, after three years of service to Division 10 as lead editor of 2x4x10, has passed the reins of editing to Kirk Retz, after being appointed to serve as the Publications Chair of the entire Forum. This major transition (and the fact that none of the rest of us had the same software to publish the newsletter) was a great impetus for us to assess the appropriate medium for publication of 2x4x10, given the ways the legal profession has changed in the past 13 years. We’re very proud to call Asha one of our Steering Committee members and thank her for her contributions to 2x4x10.

Changes to the legal profession during the pandemic lead us to our final reason for converting 2x4x10 to a blog. Division 10 was lucky enough to have our devoted and hardworking Immediate Past Chair, Ben Patrick, holding Division 10 together during the pandemic. Traditionally, the chairs of the Forum Divisions serve a 2-year term, but Ben selflessly stayed on for an extra year to ensure consistency to Division 10 during the pandemic. As a Division, we are so thankful to Ben and I, personally, am grateful that he was my predecessor. During this time, Division 10 took note of the ways that the legal profession, the Forum, and Division 10 communicate have changed as a result of the pandemic. The shift from paper copies to the Internet and cloud-based storage was already well underway before the pandemic, but the transition was solidified when the legal community had to move to online operations essentially overnight in March 2020. Division 10 simply needs to adapt to thrive, and this was the final catalyst for converting 2x4x10 into a blog.

We hope you enjoy the new format for 2x4x10. We have posted all of the past newsletters, and are slowly cataloguing them so the articles are more easily searched by topic. We also have two new articles, which are forthcoming. Happy reading!

Best,

Emily
